Repair PDX is hosting a Repair Cafe at ADX (Art Design Xchange).
Volunteers will be fixing broken small appliances, bikes, and mending garments.
Let them know what you are bringing by completing the online registration.
Also, Emi Joyce with Modern Kintsugi Repair will be back offering ceramics repair.
Kintsugi is the Japanese practice that repairs pottery by highlighting and enhancing the breaks. Using lacquer dusted with precious metal, the artist is able to repair the pottery while rebuilding the item and celebrating the cracks.
While original Kintsugi takes a couple weeks, Emi's Kintsugi technique is an alternative and quick method and takes up to 24 hours to dry the fixed parts.
Before you register your item, here is what you need to know:
Item’s original size must be within 12 inches.
Cracked pieces must be less than five pieces. Chips must be within 1 inch.
Repaired ceramics are display, not food-contact safe.
Before you bring in your item:
Clean the pottery as well as possible (no food or accumulated dust on it).
Bring a small cardboard box or something like that to put your item to bring home without touching the fixed parts. Stuffers and adhesive tapes will be provided to keep the item from moving in the box .
Each repair will be expected to be about 30-60 minutes in situ (plus 24 hours to dry completely at home) depending on the size of chips and cracks.
If the cracks need a longer time to put together, they will get a consultation to determine next steps.
